One of Australia’s master distilleries Sullivans Cove have announced via a subtle Instagram post that they are about to release their latest Special Cask offering ‘#3’ this week. At first, this release will be exclusively to Sullivans Cove mailing list members. For those who know the “Cove” know that this is a big deal!
This Tasmanian Distillery was recently awarded the prestigious title of “Best Single Cask Single Malt Whisky” in the World Whisky Awards and are clearly looking to release something special to celebrate. From the launch of the limited ‘Special Cask’ range in 2017, Sullivans Cove have been in strong demand selling out rapidly despite the $750 AUD price tag. This demand and price tag is warranted as both the ‘Cask #1’ and ‘Cask #2’ releases scored very highly with Whisky judges and journalists from around the world.
So what do we know about the incoming ‘Special Cask #3’ release, well we know that it has come from single cask (duh!). Cask TD0119 to be exact. TD0119 is a 225 litre French Oak Cask used originally matured Australian white wine. The #3 expression has been aged a smidgen under twelve years and taking the angles’ share into consideration should produce about 321 bottles.
#3 is slightly different to earlier ‘Special Cask’ releases in that it has been matured in oak for longer. This extra duration is suspected to produce a richer, deeper , oaked whisky compared to the light and floral tones of #2 award winning release.
“this is one of the most intriguing casks I’ve had the pleasure of watching mature. It is unique, charming, and with every component singing in harmony. This is one of my favourite whiskies I’ve had the opportunity to bottle”. – Heather Tillott, Sullivans Cove Production Manager
The Special Cask #3 will be initially released exclusively to Sullivans Cove mailing list members before the general public. If you want to jump the queue (and believe us you do) you can join the mailing list here.
